Fire attack fails in PJ church
By Debra Chong

PETALING JAYA, Jan 8 — A Catholic church next to the Assunta Hospital here came under attack early this morning, just hours after another church in nearby Kuala Lumpur was torched.

Roman Catholic church officials said some homemade explosives were lobbed into the Church of the Assumption in Jalan Templar at about 4am.

“It did not explode,” said Father Lawrence Andrew, the editor of Catholic paper Herald.
Lawrence was himself informed of the incident through a text message sent out by Assumption parish priest Father Phillips Muthu.

“Someone threw homemade kerosene explosives into Assumption Church, Jalan Templar, Petaling Jaya at 4am. Am going to Police later. Earlier the Metro Tabernacle was burned in Desa Melawati, media has filed story,” said the message forwarded toThe Malaysian Insider.

This is the second such reported attack on a church in the last 12 hours.

A Protestant church, Metro Tabernacle in leafy Desa Melawati, was torched at around midnight.

The fire took out the church's administrative office, which is housed on the ground floor of its three-storey premises.

Eyewitnesses recounted seeing several people on motorcycles stopping in front of the church and smashing the glass windows to pour flammable liquid and igniting the blaze.

Church officials have reported the attack to the police.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohamad Sabtu Osman said it was too early to link the attack on the church to Muslim protests over a High Court ruling allowing the weekly Herald to publish the word “Allah” to refer to God in the Christian context.

“'We are still investigating,”' he is reported to have said.

Mohamad Sabtu also warned Muslims not to take part in planned protests at several mosques in the Klang Valley after Friday prayers.

The mercury is expected to rise and all fire stations have been put on the alert.

The police have also tightened their nightly patrols around churches in the past week following the High Court ruling on Dec 31.~~~Malaysian church fire-bombed ahead of Muslim protests
By M. Jegathesan (AFP) – 4 hours ago

~~~~~~~~~~
KUALA LUMPUR — A church in Malaysia has been fire-bombed in an attack that gutted its ground floor, church officials said Friday, escalating a dispute over the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims.
A fire department official said all stations were on alert for more blazes at religious buildings, ahead of planned nationwide protests Friday by Muslim groups angry over the use of the word as a translation for "God" by Christians.
The three-storey Metro Tabernacle church in suburban Kuala Lumpur, part of the Assemblies of God movement, was set ablaze in the attack which took place around midnight, said church leader Peter Yeow, 62.
"Witnesses saw four people smash the glass and throw incendiaries into the church building. They came on two motorcycles," he told AFP at the scene as fire department forensic officers picked through the wreckage.
There were no casualties in the attack on the church, which occupies the corner lot of a row of shop houses and which Yeow said draws some 1,500 people weekly.
"The fire destroyed the administrative part of the church. We do not know if the prayer hall on the third floor suffered any damage," he said, warning all other churches to "double their guard" against any attacks.
Anuar Harun, who headed the fire department operation, said that forensic experts were working with the police and a canine unit to probe the blaze.
"We are investigating the cause of fire. We cannot provide any more details. It is a sensitive issue," he said when asked if it was a case of arson.
"We have asked all our fire stations to be on alert for such fires on religious premises," he told AFP.
The High Court last week ruled in favour of the Catholic "Herald" newspaper which has used "Allah" as a translation for "God" in its Malay-language section. The government has said the word should be used only by Muslims.
The ruling was suspended on Wednesday pending an appeal, after the government argued the decision could cause racial conflict in multicultural Malaysia, where Muslim Malays make up 60 percent of the population.
The security guard at the Metro Tabernacle church, 65-year-old V. Mariappan, said he had just walked away from the main entrance of the building to use the bathroom when the building erupted in flames.
"When I came back, there was a huge fire inside the church building. There was a few loud explosions like bombs exploding," he said, adding he saw two motorcycle helmets lying on the road in flames.
The Herald's editor Father Lawrence Andrew has warned of a campaign of intimidation including hacker attacks against the weekly's website, protest plans and widespread criticism in the media over last week's ruling.
"We believe these actions (are designed) to create a climate of fear and a perceived threat to national security so as to pressure the court in reversing its decision," he said this week.
Religion and language are sensitive issues in multiracial Malaysia, which experienced deadly race riots in 1969.
The row over the use of "Allah" is among a string of religious disputes that have erupted in recent years, straining relations between Malays and minority ethnic Chinese and Indians who fear the country is being "Islamised."
Malaysia's population includes indigenous tribes as well as the large ethnic Chinese and Indian communities -- practising Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism, among others.
More than half of Malaysia's Catholics are from indigenous groups, most of whom live on the Borneo island states and who mainly speak Malay.
Even as you're reading this, I urge you not to judge who is right nor who is wrong. I urge you, especially Christians to keep watch! Let's not condemn them, but pray for them and forgive them for God loves them as well. Christians, the sign of Christ coming is right in front of you. Take courage, watch, guard, persevere and pray!
Matthew 5:44-45 "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."
By the way, Metro Tabernacle A/G is Isaac Tay's church.
Speech of Apologies
Below is the context of apology from our beloved (or hated) class monitor to all Upper 6 students:
"Good morning to Mr. Wong, Pn. Majinah, Pn. Gan, Mr. Chin, teachers and students. I am Mock Kar Wai from Lower 6 Kensett. I'm up here on the podium to humbly apologize to all Upper 6 students on behalf of my class and myself.
I admit that I have been arrogant in many way and that I have not paid the respect that all my seniors deserve. I'm sorry that I have been a bad influence to other Lower 6 students during the orientation period. I apologize for being rude to some individuals and that I've hurt their feelings. I apologize for the wrong use of language and tone while conversing with the seniors and made them feel threatened. I humble ask for your understanding and forgiveness. Please point me my weaknesses and wrongdoings, because I'm learning and I want to learn. Job 6:24 says:"Teach me and I'll be quiet; tell me where I have been wrong."
I also ask for forgiveness on behalf of my class for things which should or should not have done. I apologize for being rude while defending my class. I'll bear all responsibilities and consequences for whatever we have done.
I hereby thank Baaarathan & Sam Pui Kay for this wake up call. Please accept my humblest apologizes and may God bless you. Thank you and enjoy the day."
Prepared by Mock Kar Wai,
Editted by Pn. Gan Swee Peng.
This speech was not presented during assembly last Thursday. He asked for a chance to present this speech from Pn. Gan and he was permitted to do so. However, the speech was stopped in time by Form 6 Society. Thank God it was not released as it might cause more problem than before.
